THESEUS

At last I have escaped the region of eternal night

the pole that keeps the dead souls shaded in their far-flung jail;

and my eyes can hardly bear the light I longed for.

Now Eleusis reaps the fourth crop of Triptolemus,75

and Libra for the fourth time makes day equal to night,

840while the confusing labor of my unknown fate

has held me back between the ills of life and death.

Though I was dead, one part of life remained to me,

a sense of my misfortune. Hercules made it end;

absconding with the dog he stole from Tartarus,

he brought me likewise to the upper realms.

But my courage is worn out and lacks its former strength,

and my footsteps stagger. Ah me, how hard it was

to seek the distant sky from lowest Phlegethon,76

both in fleeing death and keeping pace with Hercules!

850What sounds of sobbing have struck my ears?

Someone should explain. Mourning, tears and sorrow,

sad lamentation at the very threshold—it’s

hospitality that wholly fits a guest from hell.
